Look Out, Chicago!

Doc and I are coming to town. At the end of October, we will have been married 10 years and to celebrate, we are planning to have a weekend getaway in Chicago. We will be driving out on Friday, October 26th and we plan on staying Friday and Saturday night.

We would like to get together with any of you Chibloggoans who are free on the evening of Saturday, October 27th. If you all could think of a good place to meet, we'll be there with bells on. Also, if you know of a nice hotel with a good location that isn't too expensive, please let me know about it. I plan on booking a room in the very near future.

In the interim between now and the trip, We plan to study your culture so that we don't stick out as tourons. So, if there are any cultural taboos or traditions you want to warn us of, please do. We have seen the Blues Brothers and the Blues Brothers 2000, so I think we have the basics covered, but we would appreciate any advanced instruction.

Do NOT put ketchup on your hot dogs. You will be shunned.

Crap, I'll be in Chicago the weekend of the 13th. Otherwise, I'd show you around. Call me if you want some Chicago suggestions.

If you are driving in Chicago, you should be aware that (at least when I lived there 13 years ago) when a traffic light turns green, the first, and possibly also the second driver waiting to turn left get a "freebie." That is, if they are quick enough, they get to make their left turn before the oncoming traffic goes straight.

This quirk of traffic etiquette does not exist in any other major city I have driven in. CERTAINLY NOT IN LA, where it is forbidden to allow a driver to turn left, ever, even if they have an arrow.

So watch yourself.

It is nicknamed the city of big shoulders. So wear shoulder pads.

You can thank me later.

Well, Frank, wouldn't you rather put your money on a proven horse? I mean, Doc and I have been married for 10 years. These people aren't even married yet. I think you need to reconsider your priorities.

...Or maybe brunch on Sunday?

Please Frank. It would mean the world to the old lady, and I was kinda hoping we could get together so you could explain the monkey on your back in the photo.

Just sayin'. It'd be nice to see you.

I will be there, most likely. Congratulations.

You're bringing Vikkitikkittavi too?

FYI: Evil Genius is visiting Chicago at the end of September/early October.

We would be pleased to meet you, and we can even steer you to a good tiki bar or two. My legs should have healed up from the marathon by then, so I'll be able to stand around at a lively social gathering.

Why is it no one ever visits Denver? Chicago - it's always Chicago.

Sweet. It's my birthday on the 28th, so I will be free that weekend to play.

You should visit the museums. Maybe the zoo, definitely the aquarium. Buckingham fountain, take an architectural tour.

Are you bringing the kids?

I wish I could meet you all out there! I'm very happy for you and Doc, and I think you've chosen a great place to go.
Vikki, that happens in Cleveland too, hon. The lights are long and people run reds that prevent people from making last-second left turns after, so they punch it to get out beforehand. It's like you're anticipating everyone else's rudeness and watching oput for your own.

As Mr. Miller stated, I will be back in Chicago September 27 through October 2. I am sorry I will miss you guys, but Canton isn't too far from DC. Maybe someday we could plan a non-Chicago blog people meeting. Hell, Pezda's right there in Columbus. Orlando and Denver could also be considered as potential venues.
