Some Summer Reading

Sample quote: "The neglect of urban education – a capital moral offense in its own right – is but a symptom of what is happening in America. We are retreating from our social compact all down the line." Bill Moyers
What do you think?

I could get really fired up about this, but I won't. Not now. There are so many things that are so very wrong today, and it is deeply troubling. Our societal apathy and moral decay stem, in large part, from the mainstream media which panders to our basest desires and fills our heads with crap. The fall of America's once legendary educational system is a byproduct of this crap. Some blame the students, some blame the parents, some blame the educators, everyone is culpable. We now have access to 24 hour entertainment anywhere we desire it. How is school supposed to compete with that? The kids are more tech savvy and worldly (but still ignorant, a dangerous combination) long before we ever were. What of the people who should be guiding their development? They are usually too involved in their own glut of entertainment to be bothered with properly raising kids. Damn it, Flannery. You got me all worked up.

That's a great article, Flan. And you were telling me not to make you think...

The call for economic justice and real democracy toward the end of the article is, I think, even more important than the educational issues. There's a class war going on. We're just not fighting back.

I agree that our society needs improvement. I agree that there are many problems facing us, but I reject the idea that our society is in a state of moral decay. That we are somehow worse today than we were in the past.

People that wish for the qualities of the past seem to forget that we once had seperate bathrooms for black people. That women couldn't vote not to long ago, or own property.

Chris: Me too...he should totally try out for American Idol.

SD: I'm still not sure who he is. I've heard his name before, but I can't place his face. I found a reference to his speech in this month's issue of Phi Delta Kappan, which is full of thought provoking nuggets that I'm going to sprinkle around this blog.

Echo: Oh shit!

BOUM: I think things are just heating up and people are beginning to wake up. Besides, American Idol doesn't start back up again until the fall, so we'll have plenty of time to revolt over the summer.

Pezda: I totally meant to get you fired up.

Deadspot: You started it. And we will fight back...we are fighting back.

Phil: We have made progress, but we're going to have to get on the ball in order to keep up. We are also going to have to be more vigilant in protecting our society from that small but powerful minority who wish to dominate the rest of us.
