My Daughter Riley: The Conservative Voice In Our House

"Mom," Riley said, "We have a problem in the bathroom..."

"What is it?" I said heading in there, dreading what I might find.

"Look," she said pointing to the toilet seat. It was sitting crooked on the pot.

"Oh, yeah," I said, "I know; I'm buying a new one today."

The toilet seat came with the house. It's one of those awful puffy ones that exhales when you sit on it. It's white and has butterflies embroidered on the lid. It's starting to split at the front and it has simply seen its day. I've been looking for a good reason to replace it for ages.

"Oh, but I love this toilet seat...we can't get rid of it!"

Honestly, that girl gets attached to the strangest things...

I get attached to strange things, too. For the last five years, I've lived in an attic that has certain virtues, like exposed brick walls and lots of floor space, but also a ceiling that is only 6'2" at its peak and is only about 3' high in spots. Well, think about it. If you're in your room, aren't you sitting down a lot of the time?

I also get attached to things with butterflies. They're a symbol of hope and transformation. I'm not sure what they're doing on a toilet seat, though.

I spoke with Doc and we both think a split rim seat is in order so the guys don't have to lift the seat.

Maybe she can take the old one and turn it into some folk art and hang it in her room, just for old time's sake.

I admit, I like the butterflies on the toilet seat. However, it does need to go. The other night, it popped out of place and nearly turned the toilet in to a water ride.

I'll try to find something with butterflies for next Riley's birthday.

I've contemplated asking Doc for a big screwdriver many a time when I've sat down to read Fox Trot in there.

but I can totally dig the attachment thing-- Ms. R and I are kindred spirits!!
